- What if I have no off highway
experience? Not
to worry. Our club is made up of many different types of people
with a wide variety of skills and interests and a whole range of
vehicles from bone stock to wild customs. Many people just join
to enjoy the parking lot camaraderie of our monthly meetings.
And of course, many join just to hit the trail. Either way,
there's something for every skill level and vehicle type.
And best of all, we are glad to help you uncover the awesome
capabilities of your 4 wheel drive, whether you ever take it off
highway or not. And there are no egos or peer pressure here, so
if you are unsure about your off highway prowess just hitch a ride in
an empty seat. Check out the article "Being
The New Wheeler" that was written by one of our
members.

- Does my 4x4 have to
be modified to take it off highway? The
answer is no, and yes. Most stock 4x4's are capable of some
degree - and each one is different. Some members
have completely stock trucks, and many have highly modified ones.
Generally, the trail rides we go on have a variety of trail
conditions, and a lot of fun can be had. But if we get into something that's too much for
you or your 4x4, just park it and ride with someone else. Long term, you may want to consider adding certain equipment
to your vehicle to enhance its off highway ability. But if this
is all new for you, we strongly suggest you spend some time with
other members with similar trucks so that you can evaluate what
accessories and enhancements are right for you.

- Where does the membership go
off-highway?
Sometimes the runs are coordinated events set-up by SHR or by
other clubs, sometimes they are scenic, leisure runs and we try to
do a charity event of some sort every so often. Some of our runs
have included scenic runs to Lake Somerville or to Padre Island;
runs to Hot Springs, AR; Clayton, OK, areas near Austin, TX;
Poteau, OK; and Big Bend State Park, TX. We have had a
couple of meetings combined with runs at Shiloh Ridge in Alto,
TX. Several runs over the last year were work runs to BMRA,
the TMTC
property in Gilmer, TX, to build and maintain a trail for SHR as a
club to sponsor. We also frequent place like Trees Ranch,
Katemcy Rocks and places listed on our Places
to Wheel webpage.
|
- What type of terrain do you
usually cover? Many
of us have thousands of dollars invested in our trucks, and many
of us even drive them to work every day. With that in mind, most
members are not really interested in destroying their vehicles.
These are 4 wheel drives, not tanks or submarines. We seem to be
more oriented towards trail riding in the Hill Country and
Southeastern Oklahoma then we do toward rockcrawling or mud
bogging. However, we do have factions in the club that love
to go hardcore rockcrawling and others that love to go mud-bogging including mud
drags. The trips and trails you want to go on is entirely up
to you. There is no requirement to attend certain events or
make trips with the club.
|
- What do I need to know to
become a member? Not
much really. You do have to be committed to being safe and having
fun. And we do not permit any behavior that will endanger life or
property in any way. (This includes but is not limited to NO
ALCOHOL ON THE TRAIL. There is plenty of time for that when
your out of your vehicle back at camp or your hotel).
|
- What does it cost to be a
member? We have
established nominal annual dues that are used to defray our costs
in keeping in touch with membership, conducting routine
activities, paying for the clubs membership in SWFWDA,
UFWDA, and for
mailing the club newsletter. Fees are covered on our Club
Information page.
|
- What do you do at your
meetings? Our
meetings are not filled with a lot of parliamentary procedure.
We usually have dinner, generally have about an hour of
business, swap stories, catch up on the last
trip, and head to the driveway to talk about our vehicles. We
consider this a family club so mates and children are always
welcome. The more... the merrier!
|
- If I join, what do I get?
Most importantly we
think, you get access to other people who share a love of the
outdoors, four-wheeling and use it in a respectful fashion for
recreation and enjoyment.
You also get: a monthly copy of 4x4
Low Down (Our newsletter which features stories by you, tech
articles and upcoming events along with a little humor), subscription to
our club e-mail list(s), membership in Southwest
Four Wheel Drive Association along with their quarterly newsletter,
membership in United Four
Wheel Drive Association along with their biannual newsletter.
