TEXAS TRAIL RIDES 3
and the
SWFWDA Spring Quarterly Meeting
at Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area in Gilmer, TX

May 2-4, 2003

 Trail Descriptions

Trails for this event are rated based on dry weather and the most difficult obstacle(s) on the trail (most have bypasses). Difficulty will increase dramatically if wet. Also, some are quite narrow; please consult with your Trail Staff if you have a full size vehicle. SHR, TMTC & SWFWDA make no guarantees or promises that damage/breakage to ones vehicle may or may not occur. This is an off-road event and damage is possible. As the trail rating increases the possibility of damage and/or breakage increases dramatically.

Easy Trails * Medium Trails * Hard Trails

HARD TRAILS: Rear Locker required; front locker recommended. Minimum 33" tires required. Winch required (at Trail Staff discretion). Experienced drivers only. Vehicle breakage and damage probable. Tools and spare parts, such as axles and driveshafts, are recommended. Most of these trails have steep hill climbs with loose rock and big ledges near the top. Some obstacles should only be attempted by the most experienced drivers with fully equipped vehicles.

Separation Point: You will head down Shake, Rattle & Roll just to get warmed up. Then down to the southern part of the property for a challenging crawl through Spider Ravine. Next we make things more interesting by running Venom Loop (if it's wet, Hang on!) Finally, you'll take on DeWoody, one of the toughest hill climbs on the property. Get out your winch control!

Rocky Top: Start with Mad Dog's Favorite, Weenie World! You'll enjoy each challenge as you head towards the huge ledge at the end! Next, relax (just a bit!) in Horseshoe Gulch, and then head up Saturday Night Live, finishing with Shake, Rattle & Roll. Watch out for the last hill climb...that's where the "roll" part comes in!

Pack-a-Lunch: Finding trail leaders for this one was tough. It was bad enough they had to run the Fun Country and Houston Creek Trails backwards, but then throw the hill climb on Shake, Rattle and Roll in the middle and it could be a long ride.

Story Teller: Here we go again! This time you get to run them the "right" way! Houston Creek and Fun Country have some of the toughest climbs on the property. Both have some very technical areas. Twister will get your rig twisted up...if you let it! It can get interesting - especially if it's raining!

MEDIUM TRAILS: For lightly modified vehicles with rear locker. Minimum 31" aggressive tread tires required; 33" recommended. Recovery equipment, including winch, recommended. Trails include steep hills with loose rock, mud, ledges, and off camber situations. Vehicle breakage or damage possible.

Dive-on-Down: Take a nice steep drop to the bottom of the property and find yourself with a couple of choices to make it back to the top. Either way you're going to find a challenge! Then drop back down from the top and make your way over to Shake, Rattle and Roll, which is a good trail with another steep downhill section and a short water crossing.

Slick & Twisted: Start off getting extremely off camber on Twister, run Clyde's Ravine backwards; then turn off for some good hill climbs and off-camber ascents and descents of The Politician and L & B Turnpike. The ledge at the end is up to you! (There's a bypass).

Volunteer Express: Head to Horseshoe Gulch for some beautiful scenery and interesting wheelin'! Then to L & B's Turnpike. Next it's Saturday Night Live, finishing with Jerry Paul's Expressway. Scenic AND challenging, what a great combination!

Old Towner: Warm up on Old Town Trio, a series of three hill climbs / descents. The head down Jerry Paul's, backwards through Horseshoe Gulch, and finish with Clyde's Ravine: test your skills straddling this gift of nature! If it rains, all bets are off!

EASY TRAILS: For vehicles with open differentials. Stock vehicles. Four-wheel drive needed occasionally. Scenic ride with a few challenges thrown in. Obstacles may include sand, creek crossings, mud, loose rocks, and semi-steep hills and descents.

Warm Up: This run takes you to some of the newest trails on the southern end of the property. You will find some ravines, water crossings, hills with loose rock, and a few off camber situations. Your last obstacle will be a steep climb out of Old Camp.

Not So Easy: You will start by descending down a steep hill with loose rock, from there, you'll explore areas around Old Camp, where you'll find some optional ravine crawls, water crossings, mud, and a lotta fun!

BMRA's Best: This is one of the most beautiful, scenic areas on the property. You will experience small ravines, hill climbs and much more. Enjoy yourself!

Mixed Bag: You'll start by playing around on the Gravel Piles, and from there you'll head up Linda Gail's trail where you will find a few interesting, optional challenges. Along the way, you will find some loose rock hill climbs and descents. This trail can get really interesting if it's raining! Have fun!
